The US President was in the Netherlands ahead of his unprecedented second state visit later this year

Queen Maxima of the Netherlands appeared to be caught mocking President Donald Trump during a live television broadcast at the Huis ten Bosch Palace.

The incident occurred whilst the US President posed for photographs with the Dutch royal couple during his visit for the Nato summit in The Hague.

The moment was captured as Trump stood between King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima for a photocall on Wednesday.

After exchanging pleasantries with the King about his stay at the palace, Trump thanked the photographers which prompted what appeared to be an imitation from the Queen.

The moment began when Trump told the King: "That's the picture we want!"

Willem-Alexander responded: "Well I hope you slept well."

Trump replied: "It was great, the house is..." before thanking those present as they trio began to separate.

Queen Maxima was then seen to turn towards the cameras whilst appearing to replicate the President's facial expression.

Her apparent cheeky gesture was quickly followed by a grin.

The incident occurred during Trump's attendance at the Nato summit, where world leaders gathered for what the alliance described as an opportunity to build "an even stronger, fairer and more lethal Alliance".

Trump's visit to the continent comes as it was confirmed he will travel to the UK for an unprecedented State Visit later this year.

On Wednesday, it was announced that King Charles was "looking forward" to hosting the President.

"His Majesty has known President Trump for many years and looks forward to hosting him and the First Lady later this year," a Palace aide said.

Dates for the event have yet to be confirmed and will be announced when available.

However, the formal planning process for the trip has began as an official invitation signed by King Charles, known as the Manu Regia, has now been hand-delivered to the White House.

Wednesday's announcement followed reports that Downing Street had brought forward the State Visit in an attempt to buy favour with President Trump.

King Charles was said to have preferred to defer the official visit in favour of a more private informal meeting until relations between the US and Canada, where he also serves as head of state, to thaw.

Buckingham Palace confirmed this was not the case, with both King Charles and the Government remaining in concert throughout the process.

They explained that the packed diaries of both the King and Trump meant a private one on one over the summer could not be accommodated.

The aide added that this reality is appreciated and accepted by all parties involved.
