Netflix is planning a new series on Royal Family despite Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's upcoming projects.

On the back of the successful film Scoop about Prince Andrew, executives at Netflix could bring back a mini-series or film about the royals.

According to an insider, Netflix bosses are discussing a new prequel of the hit show The Crown but focus on “former royal playboys.”

It comes as Harry and Meghan are planning two non-fiction projects, which form part of the deal they signed with Netflix in 2020.

The first series will see Meghan celebrate the joys of cooking, gardening and friendship while the second documentary will follow the world of professional polo.

The final season of Netflix’s epic drama The Crown about the Royal Family aired in November and December 2023.

Now bosses are keen to bring back a royal historical drama in a new form to be released in “bite-size” helpings.

A source said that the success of the film Scoop shows there is interest in “moments in time” for the royals.

Scoop, which was released in April 2024, depicted Prince Andrew’s infamous Newsnight interview with Emily Maitlis.

The insider told The Sun: “If they can repeat that pattern by delivering prequels in a shorter form, they believe they may have come up with a winning formula for a new incarnation of The Crown.”

The first royal who may be portrayed is Edward VII, also known as Bertie, who was the eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

Queen Elizabeth II’s great-grandfather was caught up in several scandals throughout his life garnering the nicknames ‘Dirty Bertie’ and ‘Playboy Prince.’

However, bringing back another series on the Royal Family may cause controversy surrounding the accuracy of the storylines.

Last year, writer and broadcaster Hugo Vickers said there was “no one happier than he” that The Crown had come to an end.

He told Tatler: “Since 2016, I have forensically taken apart the 50 episodes in the first five series for The Times.

“I found numerous mistakes in storylines and timelines. Characters were introduced into the story who could not have been there, dead people were portrayed as still living.”
