King Charles will host President Trump for an unprecedented second State Visit next month

Music legend Sir Rod Stewart has backed Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey’s boycott of Donald Trump's State Banquet after he was slammed for “deeply disrespecting” King Charles.

The Kingston & Surbiton MP announced this week that he would boycott a State Banquet put on for US President Trump by the King when he visits the UK next month.

Sir Ed’s announcement sparked debate in the political sphere, with Shadow Foreign Secretary Dame Priti Patel calling the move “an act of deep disrespect to His Majesty the King”.

However, Sir Rod celebrated the Lib Dem leader’s decision to “snub” the invitation from the King.

“Well done, Sir Ed Davey, for snubbing an invitation from Buckingham Palace to meet the only man that could put an end to the end to the war in the Ukraine... Donald Trump,” the music legend wrote.

“Sir Rod Stewart CBE,” he signed off.

The post, shared on social media, featured stark white text on a simple black background.

Sir Ed revealed he had chosen to decline his invite to a lavish State Banquet put on for President Trump during his state visit later this month because of the US leader’s handling of the war in Gaza.

“There is no honour like an invitation from the King, and not to accept his invitation goes against all of our instincts,” the Lib Dem leader said.

“I fear we could have a situation where Donald Trump comes to our country, is honoured with a lavish dinner at one of our finest palaces, yet no one reminds him that he has the power to stop the horrifying starvation and death in Gaza and get the hostages released.

“Boycotting the banquet is the one way I can send a message to Donald Trump and Keir Starmer that they can’t close their eyes and wish this away."

“We have to speak up. They have to act. Donald Trump must act to end this humanitarian crisis,” Sir Ed concluded.

However, not all were as enthusiastic about the Lib Dem leader’s stance with Dame Priti slamming the move.

Responding to the announcement, she said: "[It's] an act of deep disrespect to His Majesty the King.

“It shows appalling judgement. America is our closest ally and security partner, and the world’s biggest economy,” she slammed.

“Ed Davey has once again proved he is not a serious leader and more interested in pathetic gesture politics,” the Conservative MP for Witham said.

The Lib Dems quickly shot back, with a party source telling GB News: “Priti Patel has a brass neck to talk about disrespecting the royal family. The Conservatives partied in Downing Street while the late Queen mourned her husband.

“Ed deeply respects the King and hasn’t taken this decision lightly,” they continued.

“He has had to weigh up the most effective way to send Donald Trump a message on Gaza," the source concluded.
