Nine of the former Queen’s descendants also share the same honour

Princess Charlotte and her cousin Princess Lilibet share a sweet similarity that ties them to the late Queen.

Despite living hundreds of thousands of miles away, the cousins are united in a unique way by their common ancestor.

It has long been a royal tradition to give a new baby a name that has historical and familial nods.

The tradition has waned over the years, with the names chosen becoming far less formal.

However, many still contain links to former monarchs including Lilibet and Charlotte who both have names linked to Queen Elizabeth II.

Nine of the former Queen’s descendants have been named in her honour, including the only daughter of the Prince and Princess of Wales, the daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, and Princess Anne.

The Prince and Princess of Wales’s daughter was born in 2015 and was given the name Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.

The Duke and Duchess’ daughter was born six years later and also given a nod to the late monarch, as Harry and Meghan chose to name her Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor.

Not only do the cousins share a link to the Queen, but they also have a similar tie to their grandmother, Princess Diana, as both have also been named in her honour.

In March, Harry and Meghan declared that it was their children’s “birthright” to be called Prince and Princess.

The King is reported to have reassured them after the Queen’s funeral that Archie and Lilibet would be permitted to use the titles.

Other members of the family named after the late monarch include Princess Beatrice (Beatrice Elizabeth Mary), Zara Tindall (Zara Anne Elizabeth) Isla Phillips (Isla Elizabeth) and Lady Louise Windsor (Louise Alice Elizabeth Mary).

Charlotte could one day be referred to as the Princess Royal

When William accedes to the throne, Princess Charlotte has been tipped to inherit a very senior royal title.

She could be stylised as the Princess Royal, which is currently what Princess Anne is referred to.

The role is given typically to the eldest daughter of the monarch, however, if the previous holder is alive, then the title is not always assured.

When the Princess Royal dies, the title goes back to the monarch to decide whether to hand to their daughter, if they have one.

It is not automatically inherited by the monarch’s eldest daughter.
