Prince Harry is doing an interview with Good Morning America to discuss his father's cancer diagnosis

A royal correspondent has said that he "hopes that Prince Harry has sought permission" to conduct the interview on his father's health that is taking place today.

In a trailer released by Good Morning America on X, the Duke of Sussex will join the breakfast chat show to detail "his life with Meghan, how his father King Charles is doing, and his passion for supporting wounded warriors".

Last week Prince Harry made a brief trip to the UK to visit his father after news broke that The King has been diagnosed with cancer.

Even though Buckingham Palace released a statement on the King's health, the monarch has kept a lot of the details quiet including the form of cancer and the stage.

Discussing the announcement of the interview, royal correspondent Rafe Heydel-Mankoo said: "I would hope that he's limited his comments because we have to remember, this is a discussion about another person's health.

"Prince Harry wants everyone to respect his privacy. So I hope that in this interview he is going to respect his father's privacy too.

"Prince William has also spoken about his father's condition, but in a very limited context.

"All he said was that he expressed his gratitude to the public for their messages of support for his wife, who's also undergone surgery, and for his father.

"I would very much hope that that's the model that Prince Harry has chosen to follow in this interview."

GB News host Ben Leo asked him: "Do you reckon that his father or the Palace knew about this interview? And what do you think their reaction will be?"

The expert responded: "Going by past precedence, I wouldn't be certain that they know about it at all.

"They may well have learned about this in the same way that we did.

"Certainly, you would hope that there was at least some indication from Harry of seeking permission to speak about his father's health in this way."

Leo then chimed in: "It's like the old famous South Park episode of Harry and Meghan a few months ago saying we want privacy. We want privacy.

"Yet they're happy to spill the beans about their family at any opportunity."

In the interview Harry was asked: "What is your outlook on his [the King's] health?" but he did keep it private and replied: "That stays between me and him."

He also hinted that he has plans to return to The UK in due course.
