Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's endgame is to return to the royal family fold, according to a royal insider.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were said to have warmed relations with King Charles after a birthday phone call for his 75th birthday.
Journalist and royal commentator Richard Eden, speaking on the Palace Confidential Podcast said: "To me it smacks of desperation. It smacks of Harry and Meghan wanting to come back in the royal family.
"They want to keep that link to the royals.

"We don't have Meghan sending videos of her children singing happy birthday to her father.
"He's been cut out, no one cares about him.
"But when it comes to the King and that connection. A connection which as we know is very lucrative when it comes to Netflix deals etc. They seem very keen to maintain that and it does seem desperate."
Relations between Harry and Meghan and King Charles have been mixed.
King Charles was said to be 'very upset' after details of the phone call for his birthday were leaked to the media.
It comes as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended a National Hockey League (NHL) game in Vancouver, Canada.
Harry was pictured dropping the puck for Tomas Hertl from the San Jose Sharks and Vancouver Canucks’ Quinn Hughes during a ceremonial face-off ahead of the whistle.
The duke joined his wife in the stands as they watched the Canucks win 3-1 over the Californian team.
Meghan Markle has not kept contact with her father, according to reports
ReutersThe Invictus Games, the international multi-sport event for wounded, injured and sick armed forces personnel, which the duke founded in 2014, will be held in Vancouver and Whistler in 2025.
The couple appeared in public together for the first time at the Toronto Invictus Games in 2017.
Harry’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, made the ceremonial puck drop at a 2002 match, also between the Vancouver Canucks and San Jose Sharks, during her two-week Golden Jubilee tour of Canada.
