The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have demanded that the firm provides them with copies of the photos and videos taken on Tuesday

Prince Harry has suffered a brutal dig from a paparazzi agency that slapped down his and Meghan Markle's request.

Backgrid has said it rejected a demand from the Sussexes to share the material taken in New York on Tuesday night.

The agency made a dig at the Royal Family and referenced King Charles in its rejection of the Sussexes' request.

They said in a letter: "In America, as I'm sure you know, property belongs to the owner of it: Third parties cannot just demand it be given to them, as perhaps Kings can do.

"Perhaps you should sit down with your client and advise them that his English rules of royal prerogative to demand that the citizenry hand over their property to the Crown were rejected by this country long ago.

"We stand by our founding fathers."

Backgrid told the BBC that Meghan and Harry's letter to them stated: "We hereby demand that Backgrid immediately provide us with copies of all photos, videos, and/or films taken last night by the freelance photographers after the couple left their event and over the next several hours."

It comes as Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's "near catastrophic" car chase claim was dismissed by their taxi driver on the evening.

Sukhcharn Singh picked up Meghan and Harry from the New York City Police Department’s 19th precinct, where they had gone to get away from paparazzi, on Tuesday evening.

Singh has called the couple's statement on the car chase "exaggerated" after speaking out on the incident.

He told NBC: "I think that’s all you know, exaggerated and stuff like that. So don’t read too much into that, you know.

"New York City is the safest place to be."

In a separate interview, Singh told the Washington Post: "I don’t think I would call it a chase."

"I never felt like I was in danger. It wasn’t like a car chase in a movie."
