The Duchess of Sussex stepped down as a working royal nearly four years ago

Meghan Markle is in "panic mode" according to a royal source, as the Duchess of Sussex is struggling to "hold on to connections" from the Royal Family.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex moved to California after stepping down as working royals in 2020, and have attempted to live a "Hollywood lifestyle".

But seeing as Meghan and Harry have not made a joint appearance with the Royal Family since Queen Elizabeth II's funeral in 2022, their "royal currency is dwindling", according to a source.

This means that the Sussexes are attempting to "hold on to their connections" in order to fund their lifestyles.

A source explained: "Meghan and Harry are in panic mode and it's becoming clearer and clearer that their royal currency is dwindling which is having a knock-on effect on their Hollywood careers.

"They both know full well that their success rests on their royal connections.

"Being snubbed from King Charles's birthday celebrations was a huge wake-up call that the Royal Family is no longer prepared to put on a façade in a bid to fund their Hollywood lifestyles."

Prince Harry, 39, is keen for the couple to "stand on their own two feet", according to the source.

However, Meghan, 42, feels as though they are slowly being "phased out".

The source also told Closer Magazine: "[Meghan] says she won't be seen as two-faced but they will need to make an effort to hold on to their connections.

"It's a difficult balance and it's definitely causing tension."

Since moving to California, Harry and Meghan have launched their non-profit organisation, Archewell.

They have also welcomed two children, Prince Archie, four, and Princess Lilibet, two.

Meghan and Harry live in a mansion in Montecito, with neighbours ranging from Katy Perry to Oprah Winfrey.

In April earlier this year, the duchess signed for representation with the talent agency William Morris Endeavor (WME), where she is expected to produce various pieces of content.
