King Frederik and Queen Mary have jetted off for a secret holiday with their children, leaving Queen Margrethe as head of State.

The King and Queen of Denmark are travelling abroad during their children’s Easter holidays for some rest.

The Danish royals have four children: Crown Prince Christian, 18, Princess Isabella, 16 and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, 13.

A Palace spokesperson told the Danish publication Her&Nu that Queen Margrethe, 83, will act as head of state in the Danish monarch’s absence.

Queen Margrethe, who recently abdicated the throne, will be spending the Easter holidays at Marselisborg Castle in Aarhus.

The Royal Family often head to Jutland and their palace at Aarhus for Easter and Christmas holidays.

The location of the Royal Family’s holiday has been kept under wraps; the only information shared is that they will travel outside of Denmark.

According to Her&Nu, the Royal Family is “on a private stay abroad in connection with Easter.”

The family often travel abroad and spent most of December in Australia and one week in mid-February in Switzerland.

King Frederik has spoken about the importance of taking time to rest in his book called The King’s Word.

In the book, he states: “Timeouts are important because we will probably have even more to do.

“Mary and I have areas of interest that will increasingly require our presence in very different forums here at home and abroad.”

There has been no word about when the family will return from their holidays, but according to the royal calendar, Mary has a public engagement at the Freedom Museum on April 3.

The King and Queen of Denmark will be spending time away from their children in the coming months as they undertake their first foreign state tour as Danish monarchs.

The royal couple is expected to travel to their Scandinavian neighbours in May on their first official visit.

The Danish royals will travel to Sweden and Norway to meet with the Nordic monarchs.

The royal palace in Copenhagen announced: “When the King and The Queen travel on their Majesties’ first official state visit to Sweden at the beginning of May, it will, at the same time, kick off a major tour around the Northern region.”

Later in the summer, Frederik and Mary will then travel to two territories of the Danish kingdom, the Faroe Islands and Greenland.

When the King travelled to Poland in January, Prince Christian, Denmark’s 18-year-old heir, stepped up as head of state instead of his mother, Queen Mary.

The King and Queen’s eldest son took on the role ahead of Mary as he is “deputy regency” and so the role fell to him first.
