Former Head of Royal Protection Dai Davies says the King is a 'complex character'

New behind the scenes insight into King Charles has been revealed as the monarch celebrates his 75th birthday today.

Military forces carried out two gun salutes in London's Green Park and Tower Bridge as the King celebrated his second birthday of the year, the first on June 17.

King Charles III, formerly known as The Prince of Wales, became King following the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II on 8 September 2022.

The King and Queen Camilla spent his birthday paying visit to Oxfordshire to launch his latest project, the Coronation Food Project.

On Monday, the King and Queen held a birthday party at their Highgrove home in Gloucestershire, where he was presented with a three tier birthday cake.

A local choir was also in attendance to sing Happy Birthday for the monarch.

Sharing insight into King Charles behind the scenes, former Head of Royal Protection Dai Davies spoke to GB News to reveal more about his "complex character".

Davies recalled working with the King and praised his "huge human empathy" for those less privileged.

Davies revealed: "I remember going to Dunblane with him when we were commemorating the tragic death and the shooting of all those children up there, and it showed me the empathy of the man and without whatever else he has, right or wrong, he has huge human empathy towards those less privileged.

"But he's a complex character in my opinion, and if you cross him, as I understand it, you won't get back in favour."

Davies continued: "He's an incredibly interesting individual. And I think he is getting on with the job of being King very well indeed, despite some of the misgiving some people may have had of it."

Davies was joined on Britain's Newsroom by royal broadcaster Helena Chard, who also praised the monarch's success in his first year's reign.

Chard said: "I think he's doing fantastically. He's really, really good at what he does. He's a real statesman. I think people really just doubted that he could go out and lead, and he surprised everybody."

Davies was then asked about the difficulties of royal security and protecting King Charles, to which Davies revealed: "He's fortunate in the sense that he's had protection since birth, and as a consequence the people doing it are extremely well trained, know him well, know his movements, know his likes and dislikes and accordingly each event is carefully planned.

"So there is a great deal of planning that goes into his protection. But as I mentioned, since 1969 when he was invested in North Wales, people have tried to hurt him. And indeed, back in 1983, from memory in the Dominion Theatre, the IRA tried to blow him up and Princess Diana, along with Duran Duran.

"Again not so long ago in Ireland, 2015, six men were arrested then for plotting to cause him harm when he came to commemorate his great his uncle. So you know, you constantly have to be aware."
