Washington Sundar, who had confidently declared to the media on Sunday evening that "India will win", was spectacularly caught by Archer diving forward in his follow-through.
The dismissals left India reeling at 112 for eight wickets.
India's resistance was led by Ravindra Jadeja, who demonstrated extraordinary determination in partnerships with the lower order. The left-hander first batted alongside Nitish Kumar Reddy for 15 overs before being joined by number 10 Jasprit Bumrah.
The pair frustrated England for nearly 22 overs, adding 35 runs with Bumrah contributing just five from 54 deliveries. Stokes eventually broke through, inducing Bumrah to pull to mid-on.
