The King has returned to work following his summer break

King Charles toured the Birmingham Oratory today to mark the canonisation of Cardinal John Henry Newman, viewing historic treasures and the Cardinal’s preserved personal effects.

On arrival, Charles was received by the Archbishop of Birmingham and the Provost of the Birmingham Oratory, Father Ignatius Harrison, who guided him through the church and gave an explanation of its history.

The King was accompanied by Daniel Joyce, curator of the Newman Museum, on a tour of the building, which included the sacristy where some of Cardinal Newman’s vestments were displayed.

In the library, His Majesty viewed several historic items, among them The Polyglot Bible (1657) with a dedication to King Charles II.

He also saw the library’s oldest book, dating back to 1474, the handwritten manuscript of The Dream of Gerontius, and Cardinal Newman’s viola, thought to date from around 1800.

The King then visited the Cardinal’s room, which had remained untouched since he died in 1890, to see his personal effects.

Before departing, Charles met members of the Oratory community and staff in the courtyard, where he unveiled a plaque commemorating his visit.

The Birmingham Oratory was founded by Cardinal Newman in 1848 after he joined the Congregation of the Oratory in Rome.

The current church building was opened in 1909 in his memory.

Newman, who was created a cardinal in 1879, remained at the Oratory until his death.

He was canonised at the Vatican in 2019, an occasion attended by Charles, then Prince of Wales, who also met Pope Francis ahead of the ceremony.

During today's visit, the King was shown around the grand interior of the Oratory, pausing to admire the ornate marble columns and richly decorated ceiling.
