The royal was presenting the Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design at the function.
According to Kensington Palace sources, her choice of the sharply tailored two-piece was intended to demonstrate support for British designers.

"Kate wanted to show her support for Victoria Beckham," the friend claimed. "She's aware of what Victoria and David have been going through."
A Kensington Palace spokesman declined to comment on this suggestion.
The fashion choice comes as Brooklyn Beckham and his wife Nicola Peltz recently attended a VIP dinner at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Montecito mansion.
According to a source close to the Sussexes, the couple were not "directly invited" by Harry and Meghan.

People magazine, described as the Sussexes' preferred US publication, reported their attendance was likely arranged through a mutual friend or intermediary.
Brooklyn, 26, and Nicola, 30, who live approximately 90 minutes from the Sussexes in Los Angeles, reportedly had "a wonderful time" at the dinner.
The gathering was part of a larger event rather than an exclusive meeting between the two couples.
"While it was an intimate gathering, there were several additional guests, including VIPs and film executives," an insider told MailOnline.
The dinner appears to have fostered a meaningful connection between Meghan and Nicola, with sources claiming they had a "deep and meaningful" conversation.
