Stand-up comedian Jo Koy was roped in last minute to host the annual awards ceremony

Stand-up comedian Jo Koy has been criticised by showbiz reporter Stephanie Takyi, after taking aim at the Royal Family during his opening monologue at the Golden Globes.

The 52-year-old comedian, dubbed overnight by critics as the 'worst host of all time', took to the Globes stage for the first time to host the 81st annual ceremony in Beverly Hills.

Koy was met with tepid reaction from the star-studded room full of Hollywood talent, as he defended his last-minute presenting job.

Koy declared "I got the gig 10 days ago!", and made clear he "didn't care" if the actors and actresses failed to find his jokes funny.

Among the digs at stars such as Robert De Niro and Taylor Swift, who were both in attendance for nominations, Koy chose to attack the British Royal Family.

Following the success of The Crown on Netflix and Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's prolific welcome to the States, Koy made the British Monarchy a topic of conversation in his opening remarks.

Sharing his thoughts on series nominee Succession, Koy jibed: "Succession is a great series about a rich, white, dysfunctional family, all scheming..oh, wait, that's The Crown. I'm sorry!"

The crowd burst into laughter as he then praised star of the series Imelda Staunton, asking "how good was she?"

Reacting to the comments made by Koy, Showbiz Reporter Stephanie Takyi said he "pushed controversial too far", branding him "distasteful".

Takyi continued: "He made fun of the royals, he made fun of Taylor Swift, and he's been really hung out to dry. I don't think he will be ever presenting the Golden Globes again.

"Usually most people say he's quite funny and that's the whole reason why he was picked in the first place, but last night, I don't know if it was the pressure, I don't know if it was the nervousness, but this is the first Golden Globes that they've had on TV in the first two years.

"And to be honest, he's just taken all the the headlines for the wrong reasons."

Koy also gave an honourable mention to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in his monologue, making the Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos visibly laugh at his joke.

He told the audience: "Harry and Meghan Markle got paid millions for doing absolutely nothing – and that's just by Netflix".
