The Royal Family will mark the 80th Anniversary of VJ Day on August 15

The Duchess of Edinburgh met with Mr James ‘Jim’ Wren, a 105-year-old Royal Marines veteran, at his care home in Salisbury today.

Sophie is Patron of The Java Far East Prisoner of War Club 1942, and the engagement comes just days before the 80th Anniversary of VJ Day on Friday.


The duchess met Mr Wren and his family for a cup of tea to hear about Jim Wren’s experiences during the Second World War.

Mr Wren survived the sinking of HMS Repulse in 1941 and was later a Prisoner of War for three and a half years, having been captured whilst escaping from Singapore in February 1942.

After meeting Mr Wren and his family, the duchess visited a seated exercise class to meet other residents at Sarum Manor Care Home.

The engagement comes as the Royal Family confirmed that senior members of the monarchy will make public appearances to commemorate the milestone anniversary on August 15th.

The engagements will remember the end of the Second World War around the world.

King Charles will deliver an audio message on the morning of VJ Day to mark the historic occasion on Friday.

The monarch and Queen Camilla will attend the Service of Remembrance at the National Memorial Arboretum.

The national service, hosted by the Royal British Legion in partnership with the government, will be followed by a reception.

King Charles and Queen Camilla will have the opportunity to meet Second World War veterans at the reception.

However, the Prince and Princess of Wales are not expected to participate in engagement over the coming days.

On VJ Day, Prince Edward and Sophie will attend a service at the Scottish National War Memorial, Edinburgh Castle, organised by the Royal British Legion Scotland.

The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester have been confirmed to attend the Far East Prisoners of War VJ Day 80th Anniversary Service at Norwich Cathedral.

The couple will then join a second commemorative service dedicated to the Children and Families of the Far East Prisoners of War in Suffolk.

Events to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of VJ Day will conclude with a Reception for veterans at Windsor Castle later in the Autumn.
