The mayor has slammed the government for not providing enough support to asylum seekers

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has warned America's migrant crisis has the power to “destroy” the city.

Adams ripped into President Biden’s government for not giving any support to asylum seekers who arrive to the city in their thousands every month.

The mayor said at a town hall meeting yesterday: “I’m gonna tell you something, New Yorkers, never in my life have I had a problem that I didn’t see an ending to. I don’t see an ending to this.

He stressed: “This issue will destroy New York City. Destroy New York City.

“We're getting 10,000 migrants a month... Now we're getting people from all over the globe have made their minds up that they're going to come through the southern part of the border and come into New York City."

The city has received more than 110,000 migrants in the past year.

The mayor believes that Biden has not stepped in to deal with the situation.

“Month after month I stood up and said this is gonna come to a neighbourhood near you. Well, we’re here, we’re getting no support on this national crisis, and we’re receiving no support,” Adams said.

The Mayor also slammed the Governor of Texas Greg Abbot who has run a high-profile campaign to send migrants to New York, Los Angeles and other cities via bus.

He branded Abbot as a “madman”, for sending Texan migrants to more democratic cities, who have supported a more welcoming immigration policy.

“Go item for item on what Eric Adams ran for as a candidate and look at what we accomplished in 20 months: We turned this city around in 20 months, and then what happened?” Adams said.

“Started with a madman down in Texas who decided he wanted to bus people up to New York City.”

A bus filled with migrants sent up from Texas first arrived in New York in August 2022.

Since then, 13,0000 more asylum seekers originally located in Texas, have arrived by bus to the city, according to data shared by Adams.

“One hundred ten thousand migrants we have to feed, clothe, house, educate the children, wash their laundry sheets, give them everything they need, health care,” Adams said.

“Now we’re getting Western Africa, now we’re getting people from all over the globe that made their minds up that they’re gonna come through the southern border and coming to New York City,” the mayor added.

Many New Yorkers agree with Adams’ fears for the city due to the crisis.

A total of 82 per cent say it’s a major issue whilst 58 per cent want to stop the flow from the southern border, according to a survey conducted by Sienna College.
