Donald Trump won the Iowa caucus with 51 per cent of the vote

Vice President Kamala Harris has admitted she is "scared as heck" about the outcome of this year's US election, after Donald Trump secured his first victory in the Republican race.

Former US President Donald Trump secured a resounding win in the first 2024 Republican presidential contest in Iowa on Monday.

Trump took 51 per cent of the vote, with Ron DeSantis taking second place at 21 per cent, and Nikki Haley securing 19 per cent.

Despite facing many criminal charges, the former leader is getting closer to an election rematch with current POTUS Joe Biden.

Taking to his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump said of the result: "THANK YOU IOWA, I LOVE YOU ALL!!!"

In response, President Biden wrote on X: "Looks like Donald Trump just won Iowa. He's the clear front runner on the other side at this point. But here's the thing: this election was always going to be you and me vs. extreme MAGA Republicans. It was true yesterday and it'll be true tomorrow."

Appearing on ABC's panel show The View, Vice President Kamala Harris was grilled on Biden's battle against the Republican candidate, after former President Barack Obama accused the Democrats of being "too complacent".

Kamala defended Biden and their administration, warning we should "all be scared" of Trump possibly taking a second term in office.

Host Joy Behar asked Harris: "Are you scared of what could happen if Trump ever became, God forbid, President again? And what are you going to do to stop the crazies?"

Harris admitted: "I am scared as heck, which is why I'm travelling our country. There's an old saying that there are only two ways to run for office, either without an opponent or scared.

"So on all of those points, yes, we should all be scared."

Harris stated that the Biden administration needs to "earn the re-election", and she is working hard on the campaign tour around Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina and South Carolina in the last few weeks alone, to get the Democrat's message across.

Harris told The View's audience: "Many of us know when we are scared for the future of our children, do we then stay in bed with the covers over our heads? No, we cannot.

"And this is where this election, it requires rightly that President Biden and I and all of us who are part of this administration, we've got to earn re-election. There is no question we have to be on the road.

"We have to earn the re-elect and we have to communicate what we have achieved, and that is going to be one of our big challenges.

"We've done a lot of good work, and we need to let people know who brought it to him."
