President Biden has won New Hampshire's Democratic primary, despite not being on the ballot.
He declined to enter the contest after the Democratic National Committee moved their first primary to the more diverse state of South Carolina.
However, supporters launched a ‘write in Biden’ campaign, with many choosing to add his name to the bottom of the ballot.
Prior to the vote taking place it was being heralded as a barometer of Biden’s political strength.
At the time of writing, Biden has about 68 per cent of the vote with 40 per cent of the write-in counted.
His win managed to prevent a surprise, and potentially embarrassing, showing by Minnesota Democrat Dean Phillips who gained about 20 per cent.
The 55-year-old has argued that Biden is weak, unelectable and vulnerable to defeat by Donald Trump.
At the Phillips watch party in Manchester, he extended his congratulations to Biden but said he won "by no means in a way that a strong incumbent president should."
In a statement, Biden said "I want to thank all those who wrote my name in this evening in New Hampshire. It was a historic demonstration of commitment to our democratic process."
