The US President said he felt 'very badly' about the attack which happened within a 'close ally of the United States'

Donald Trump has laid into an Israeli strike on Hamas leaders in Qatar - and has claimed he tried to stop it.

In a social media post, the President said when he became aware of the strike, he ordered his Special Envoy Steve Witkoff "to inform the Qataris of the impending attack", however, it was "too late".

The Commander-in-Chief slated the decision to launch a strike "inside Qatar, a sovereign nation and close ally of the United States, that is working very hard and bravely taking risks with us to broker peace".

He said such a decision "does not advance Israel or America's goals".

The post also said the Trump administration was made aware of the attacks by the US military, not by Israel.

According to Karoline Leavitt, the White House Press Secretary, Mr Trump "made his thoughts and concerns about this very clear" during a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The Qatari Government has rejected claims that the country was pre-warned by the US.

Majed al-Ansari, a spokesman for Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, posted on social media: "The call that was received from an American official came during the sound of the explosions that resulted from the Israeli attack in Doha."

Meanwhile, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, the Qatari Prime Minister, said the first call from a US official came at 3.56pm, but the first attack happened at 3.46pm.

Qatari Ambassador to the UN Alya Ahmed Saif Al-Thani said: "The state of Qatar strongly condemns this cowardly criminal assault, which constitutes a blatant violation of all international laws and norms.

"Investigations are underway at the highest level, and further details will be announced as soon as they are available."

She also called the attack a "serious escalation".

Hamas confirmed that five of its members had been killed in the attack which took place on Tuesday, including the son of Hamas leader Khalil Al-Hayya.

The proscribed terror organisation also said it held the US partially responsible.

Sir Keir Starmer was also amongst international politicians who condemned the attack which he said risked "further escalation across the region".

The UK Prime Minister is set to meet with Israeli President Isaac Herzog in London on Wednesday.

It is understood Sir Keir will raise the "intolerable situation in Gaza" during the meeting, as well as discussing "the action Israel must take to end the horrific suffering" in the region.

Some 60 MPs and members of the House of Lords have called on the Government to deny entry to the Israeli President.
