The deal had been announced in a phone call between Trump and Starmer last month

Donald Trump has confirmed he has signed a document finalising a trade deal with the UK.

The deal, which was agreed last month, has been finalised with the US President calling Sir Keir Starmer his "friend".

The pair appeared together in front of reporters at the G7 summit in Canada.

Trump called the relationship with Britain "just fantastic", as Starmer added: "We signed it and it's done."

Speaking to reporters, Trump said: "We're very long-time partners, allies and friends."

Pointing to Starmer, the US President said he has become friends with the Prime Minister "in a very short period of time".

Trump jestered: "He is slightly more liberal than I am, but we get along", with Starmer adding: "We make it work."

Trump said last month that the deal would "cement the relationship" between the UK and the US.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

The US President wrote on his Truth Social page last month: "The agreement with the United Kingdom is a full and comprehensive one that will cement the relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom for many years to come.

"Because of our long time history and allegiance together, it is a great honour to have the United Kingdom as our FIRST announcement.

"Many other deals, which are in serious stages of negotiation, to follow!"

Trump previously called it a "great honour" to confirm the UK as the first nation to secure a deal under his current administration.

The new trade agreement between America and Britain includes the lifting of a 25 per cent tariff on UK steel and aluminium, and reduces the tariff on most car exports from 27.5 per cent to 10 per cent.

The trade deal has three key objectives that the UK and the US can expect.

First, it is to grow the quality and volume of mutually beneficial trade between the two countries, creating good, high-paying jobs and fostering growth in both countries.

The second is to remove barriers, making it easier for businesses in both nations to operate, invest, and trade with each other.

It emphasised the need to ensure that the special relationship is rooted in the economic partnership, ensuring the partnership is fair and reciprocal.
