The Prime Minister took aim at the former First Minister in front of Tory Party members in Manchester

Rishi Sunak has been reported to Police Scotland after making comments about former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon during his conference speech earlier today.

The Prime Minister joked Sturgeon could land herself in hot water after she was quizzed by officers during Police Scotland's Operation Branchform investigation into SNP finances.

He said: "Nicola Sturgeon wanted to go down in the history books as the woman who broke up our country but it now looks like she may go down for very different reasons."

Sunak added: "We are a remarkable combination of four nations with a proud history, and that history should give us enormous confidence in our future."

Sturgeon was arrested and questioned during the investigation into SNP finances earlier this year.

The former First Minister was later released without charge.

Chris McEleny, the general secretary of the rival pro-independence Alba Party, reported Sunak over his remarks about Sturgeon.

McEleny said the investigation should be able to pursue its investigation "fearlessly without interference from Rishi Sunak".

He added: "The Prime Minister is commenting on, and making an assumption about a live Police Scotland investigation.

"In Scotland, contempt applies from arrest, not from charging.

"Operation Branchform is investigating serious matters of the utmost importance to Scotland and trust in politics.

"It is too important a matter to allow interference from the Prime Minister in this act of contempt when many people await the facts of Police Scotland's investigation."

Police Scotland's investigation into SNP finances concerns allegations that £666,953 raised since 2017 specifically for a second independence referendum campaign was in part improperly spent.

Former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell, who is married to Sturgeon, and ex-SNP Treasurer Colin Beattie were also arrested and questioned.

The pair were released without charge pending further investigations.

A Police Scotland spokesperson told GB News: “We have received a complaint and, following consultation with the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, no police action is being taken at this time.”
