Four Tory seats, one Labour and one Green could fall to Farage's candidates

Reform UK is facing six key council by-election battles this week as Nigel Farage's party looks to continue their momentum after bagging four victories recently.

Four Tory seats are up for grabs, with one Labour seat and one Green Party seat available for Reform to take.

Notably, one other by-election is happening in Berkhamsted West, Dacorum, but Farage's party has elected not to put forward a candidate for the seat.

However, with six opportunities for seats to go turquoise, which one could be the biggest win for Reform UK?

Bromley Common and Holwood, Bromley

Following the passing of Councillor Jonathan Laidlaw, a by-election has been scheduled with Laidlaw previously being an advocate for Reform UK having attended a number of branch meetings.

Tributes were paid to Laidlaw with the leader of Bromley Council, Cllr Colin Smith, saying: "As we mourn the loss of Councillor Laidlaw, our thoughts, prayers and condolences are with Jonathan's family and friends at this desperately sad time."

Five candidates are standing in the election, with Reform's candidate Alan Cook pushing to be the "strong, unrelenting voice" for residents.

Cook said: "I am a father-of-two and following a successful career in the city, I am now determined to work hard to deliver Reform UK's objective of effective local Government, run in the interests of families, small businesses and the community as a whole."

Most notably, the Reform candidate would "start the conversation" of splitting Bromley from the Greater London Authority as he does not believe Sadiq Khan's policies fit the area.

Bromley Common and Holwood, Bromley candidates:

  • Alan Cook, Reform UK
  • Ruth Fabrican, Green Party
  • Laura McCracken, Liberal Democrats
  • Elizabeth Morgan, Labour
  • Ian Payne, Conservative

Llanrumney, Cardiff

In what has been a long-standing Labour stronghold, the threat of Reform could turn the council seat turquoise.

Cllr Heather Joyce served the ward of Llanrumney in Cardiff as a Labour councillor for over 17 years and became Cardiff Council's first female leader.

Due to declining health, Joyce has resigned from her position, sparking the by-election.

Reform's candidate, Sidney Malik, has called for "change" and proposed a "new era of opportunity and accountability".

Malik said: "I am proud to have lived here for many years, and my roots are from Cardiff. I work with charities such as our children's hospital, providing air ambulances and community projects.

"I have experienced the concerns of our community and greatly appreciate the opportunity to speak with you all on what matters to you most. Vote for change. Vote for Reform UK."

Llanrumney, Cardiff candidates:

  • Ffin Elliott - Welsh Conservative
  • David Fitzpatrick - Welsh Green Party
  • Joseph Oscar Gnagbo - Plaid Cymru
  • Sidney Malik - Reform UK
  • Lexi Joanna Pocknell - Welsh Labour
  • Wayne Street - Welsh Liberal Democrats

Swanage, Dorset

Another Tory seat up for grabs is in Swanage or Dorset Council, following the passing of Cllr Bill Trite.

The Tories won the seat with 36 per cent of the vote back in 2024, fending off Labour who lost by five per cent.

John Lejeune will face four other candidates as the Conservatives look to retain their seat on Dorset Council.

Lejeune said: "Swanage is home. It is where I have raised my children with my wife, and I am passionate about seeing the very best for our town and wider Purbeck area.

"We have to be honest, our country is in a bad way... voting for the same two old failed parties will not help."

Swanage, Dorset candidates:

  • Philp Eades, Independent
  • John Lejeune, Reform UK
  • Poppy Maltby, Liberal Democrats
  • Gemma Simmons, Labour
  • Chris Tomes, Conservative

Borehamwood Brookmeadow, Hertsmere

Gus Channer will have to fend off six other candidates to turn Borehamwood Brookmeadow turquoise, with another Conservative seat up for grabs.

Channer previously stood for Reform at the Watling, Hertfordshire local election, where he received 589 votes, coming second to the Tories.

The Reform candidate said: "I am here to stand up for local residents who are seriously underrepresented.

"I have been in positions like this in my youth, so I can affiliate with this standard of living, and it's not nice, and they need help. I will help you as best I can."

Borehamwood Brookmeadow, Hertsmere candidates:

  • Madalyn Bielfeld, Green Party
  • Glenn Briski, Conservative
  • Gus Channer, Reform UK
  • Rosalind Carmel Levine, Liberal Democrats
  • Bala Mere, Labour
  • Lawrence Stack, Independent
  • Michelle Vince, Independent

Alrewas and Fradley, Lichfield

Following the resignation of independent Cllr Mike Wilcox for "personal reasons", Reform have put forward young candidate Brandon Clark to run for the seat.

Wilcox previously resigned from the Conservatives and most recently stood as an independent, but recently stepped down, triggering the by-election.

The new councillor will represent the Alrewas and Fradley ward alongside current elected members Cllr Derick Cross and Cllr Sonia Wilcox.

Clark said: "It is a pleasure and an honour to be selected as the Reform UK candidate for the forthcoming Alrewas and Fradley by-election.

"My campaign is centred around three key priorities - opposing the housing development on the former RAF Lichfield base, fighting as hard as possible to limit the operating hours of the Pyford Brook quarry and more widely, holding the Tory minority administration to account at district level.

"I also aim to work with the now Reform-controlled Staffordshire County Council and play my part in standing up for the priorities of Alrewas and Fradley residents."

Alrewas and Fradley, Lichfield candidates:

  • Glen Bown, Labour
  • Brandon Clark, Reform UK
  • Morag Maclean, Liberal Democrats
  • Richard Stephenson, Conservative

Barleythorpe, Rutland

The only Green Party seat up for grabs on Thursday is in Barleythorpe, Rutland, with the party already conceding the seat by not putting forward a candidate.

"Declan is fully committed to Reform UK's values of putting the interests of the family, the local community, and the country first by applying common sense solutions to policies which seek to restore our country to greatness and prosperity."

Barleythorpe, Rutland candidates:
