Keir Starmer has held the keys to No10 for just 37 days but his time in power has already been marked by several pitfalls.

Ahead of his landslide General Election victory on July 4, the now-Prime Minister vowed his Government would be one of “actions, not words”.

One of the first major changes Starmer introduced was to housing, where he and Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner pledged to build on the “grey belt” which they say is ripe for development.

On migration, Starmer axed the Tory’s Rwanda plan within days of seizing power and pledged to “smash the gangs” bringing illegal migrants across the Channel.

Aiming to tackle tax and the economy, Starmer and Chancellor Rachel Reeves withdrew Winter Fuel Payments from almost 10 million pensioners, axed plans for new hospitals and transport projects, and announced there would be tax rises.

Issuing a warning just after Keir Starmer entered Downing Street, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage said that “with a couple of exceptions”, the new Cabinet chosen by Starmer is “the most inexperienced people ever to have got into a British Cabinet”.

He added: “If you actually look at their life stories, their backgrounds and bear in mind, these are people making executive decisions that fundamentally affect people’s lives, I think they’re going to find it very, very hard.

“And I say that because the country faces some really fundamental problems, I suspect this Government could be in trouble pretty quickly.”
