From April, MPs will see their pay go up by almost £400 a month

MPs are to receive a 5.5 per cent pay rise taking their salary to more than £90,000, the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) announced today.

Their salaries will increase from £86,584 to £91,346 in April - an increase of £4,762. They will be paid nearly £400 a month more than the previous year.

This means MPs' pay has outstripped inflation. The Consumer Prices Index (CPI) rose by 4.0 per cent in the 12 months to January 2024, the same rate as in December 2023.

Richard Lloyd, Chair of the IPSA said in a statement: “IPSA has been responsible for deciding MPs’ pay since 2011. Since then, our aim has been to make fair decisions on pay, both for MPs and the public.

“Serving as an MP should not be reserved to those wealthy enough to fund it themselves.

"We believe our decision recognises the vital role MPs play in our democracy and considers the continued economic challenges facing the country.

"We are committed to supporting a Parliament that reflects our society, where people from all walks of life can decide to become MPs.”

IPSA pointed out that the increase is in line with the award recently agreed for the senior civil service.

The pay review body was created in 2009 following the expenses scandal. It was initially set up to manage expenses claims from MPs but its remit was later expanded to cover their salaries as well.

But this change was made, MPs were in charge of setting their own pay.

In a recent report from IPSA, Lloyd said: "MPs do not decide what their pay should be.

"The funding for running offices and employing staff does not go to MPs as a 'top up' to their salary.

"MPs do not get their own home paid for or their personal bills paid by the taxpayer."
