Sir Keir Starmer has sparked a fresh row as the Prime Minister prepares to launch a new "crackdown" to curb net migration.
The announcement comes just days after Reform UK opened up a 10-point lead over Labour in new polling.
The latest move to bring down surging migration numbers will include powers to deport foreign nationals if they commit any crime in the UK.
Currently, foreign criminals are only reported to the Home Office if they receive a jail sentence, with deportation typically considered only for those given at least a year behind bars.

The measures are expected to be included in the Government's White Paper on immigration, being published today.
Discussing Labour's efforts on GB News, commentator Adam Brooks expressed his fury at the Government, branding them "liars".
Brooks fumed: "Actions speak louder than words. You do not remove legislation that makes it illegal to cross the Channel on a dinghy if you're serious about stopping exactly that happening.
"You do not promise to get rid of migrant hotels and then suddenly sign us up to five year contracts for hundreds more."
Interjecting Brooks, former Labour Minister Bill Rammell claimed that the private rental deal was signed by the "previous Government", and they inherited a system that was "in crisis".

REUTERSRammell claimed: "Those contracts were signed by the previous Conservative government, and we inherited a system that was in crisis. But the commitment to end hotel use was a commitment for a five-year parliament - we've been in Government for nine months.
"In your fantasy world, you think you can just say things and make it happen? The system was broken."
Hitting back at Rammell, Brooks highlighted that despite the Government's election plea to "smash the gangs", they haven't smashed "a single gang".
Brooks stated: "Pre-election, you said we're going to smash the gangs, it was all over every newspaper - that was a pre-election promise. You've not smashed one gang, not one. You're liars. Labour are liars."

Echoing the thoughts of Brooks, commentator Chloe Dobbs claimed that Rammell and the Labour Government live in a "fantasy" if they believe they have made "no mistakes" during their nine months in Government.
She said: "I think that you are in a fantasy to suggest that Labour have not made any mistakes in the time that they have been in Government.
"The statement they put out after they lost the Runcorn by election, to me showed they really are not reading the room and recognising the fact that they have made mistakes."
Dobbs added: "The Labour Party are acting as though nothing's gone wrong, but the electorate are absolutely furious, and I think that it is wrong to suggest that after the result, they are not panicking. There has clearly been a marked change of tune in their messaging, which does reek of desperation."
