Sir Keir Starmer has six months to prove that he has got what it takes to be Prime Minister, a leading Labour peer who is close to figures in 10 Downing Street has said.

Lord Glasman, the founder of the Blue Labour group which represents Labour supporters in areas targeted by Reform UK, told Chopper's Political Podcast that Mr Starmer "may or may not" survive as leader at the next election expected in 2029.

The peer said: "What I see with him is that he genuinely wants to be a national leader... he's making a drastic transition from being basically a human rights lawyer to being a national politician, being a Prime Minister.

"The next six months will be decisive for him."

Asked by presenter Christopher Hope whether he will lead the party into the next election, he said: "He may or he may not.

"That's always true of politicians, by the way. Nobody predicted Thatcher going, Blair went. You know they come in they [go]."

Lord Glasman also paid tribute to Yvette Cooper, who has been moved from Home Secretary to Foreign secretary in the reshuffle, saying that he was much more Eurosceptic than previously thought.

This would lead to tougher talking between the UK and France, which has failed to demonstrate a commitment to stop small boat crossings despite the hundreds of millions of pounds handed to the country to support the UK Border Force.

She said: "She represents a Yorkshire constituency where Reform is very strong and has been that sentiment of Euroscepticism has been very strong for a long time.

"She has engaged with that. She's talked to that.

"So I actually think that she's a tougher prospect at the Foreign Office.

"The way that I see it is that the next six months, we've got to really get tougher with France."
