The Prime Minister accused the Reform leader of 'trying to whip up sanctions' to be imposed on the UK

Sir Keir Starmer has slammed Nigel Farage as a "plastic patriot" at a mass meeting of Labour MPs.

The Prime Minster took aim at the Reform UK leader, accusing him of trying to whip up sanctions to be imposed on the UK on a visit last week to the US to highlight freedom of speech concerns.

Mr Starmer told MPs that Farage had "called for sanctions to be imposed on the UK" because of concerns over freedom of speech.

He added: "Reform are plastic patriots."

The Prime Minister also took aim at the Green Party which he said were "plastic Progressives" who wanted to block national infrastructure and house building, and pull the UK out of Nato.

During the meeting of the Parliamentary Labour Party sources said "numerous" MPs paid tribute to Angela Rayner, who quit last week for breaching the ministerial code.

Mr Starmer also told the meeting that he wanted to: "Stop the boats, close the hotels and smash the gangs".

He added that he: "Never wanted communities feeling scared or intimidated because of the colour of their skin".

Sir Keir addressed Labour MPs tonight as the Prime Minister battled to get his leadership reset back on track.

The Labour leader is currently facing fury from the hard left over Labour's plan to elect a replacement for Angela Rayner as deputy leader

Just weeks ahead of Labour Party Conference in Liverpool, he also risked infuriating more of his disgruntled backbenchers.

The Prime Minister is refusing to guarantee Ms Rayner's successor will secure a Cabinet role.

Farage refused to comment on the PM’s claim that he is a “plastic patriot”.

However, he said that the accusation that he backed the tariffs on the UK because of threats to freedom of speech here was "an outright lie of the most astonishing order."

"It shows a prime minister who is so desperate that he will sink to any depths."
