The psychologist suggests conservatives with a 'spine' have been missing from the political scene over recent years

A Canadian psychologist has warned that Britain will be “Venezuela for 20 years” if Sir Keir Starmer wins the next general election.

Dr Jordan Peterson said a Labour government would be "catastrophic" but it was “highly likely”.

The former University of Toronto professor also applauded Margaret Thatcher, describing her as an “ethically admirable person”.

He added that Thatcher was also conservative with a “spine” - something that he believes has been missing from politics over recent years.

Labour has a 17 per cent lead ahead of the Tory party according to the latest polls.

Speculation has been growing that an election could be called as early as spring 2024.

"You guys, you elect a Labour government, you’re gonna be Venezuela for 20 years," Peterson told The Telegraph.

"I’m terrified it would be a catastrophe if the UK voted [in] a Labour government. You’re gonna be in for rough waters if you were foolish enough to do that. But yeah, it’s highly likely."

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Venezuela was once the richest country in South America but suffered after decades of socialist rule.

The award-winning author also criticised his own Canadian prime minister as he slammed Justin Trudeau's ideologies.

Peterson said Trudeau is among leaders who "trumpet diversity as our unity."

He added that there is an "endless multiplication of impulsive diversity… and there’s no limit to how much fragmentation that will produce.

"I think with our confusion about sex itself, we’ve actually hit maximal confusion. I don’t think you can be any more confused than that. Not good. It’s really not good.

"A culture that thinks that diversity is unity is also a culture that thinks that a man can be a woman.

"You can’t get more confused than that."
