'Large amounts of oil lay waiting to be taken,' Trump teased on Friday

Donald Trump has called on Labour to ditch "costly and unsightly" wind turbines and open up the North Sea to oil drilling in a furious attack on net zero.

The Commander-in-Chief has encouraged Sir Keir Starmer to encourage "modernised drilling" in the North Sea in order to bring down Britain's spiralling energy costs.

If Labour followed his advice, the party's controversial ban on fresh North Sea oil and gas drilling could be overturned entirely - a major blow to Ed Miliband's net zero drive.

Trump's intervention comes just days after a landmark UK-US trade deal - which he vowed was "working out well for all".

Writing on his Truth Social page, the President said: "I strongly recommend to them, however, that in order to get their energy costs down, they stop with the costly and unsightly windmills, and incentivise modernised drilling in the North Sea, where large amounts of oil lay waiting to be taken.

"A century of drilling left, with Aberdeen as the hub. The old fashioned tax system disincentives drilling, rather than the opposite.

"The UK's Energy Costs would go WAY DOWN, and fast!"

Trump's ambassador to the UK later met Starmer on Friday in a bid to "convey the priorities" of his administration.

A US embassy statement said: "Today's visit provided an opportunity to convey the priorities of the Trump administration, which includes maximising the US-UK partnership to advance our shared interests, such as the recently announced trade deal and our defence and security alliance which promotes stability and prosperity worldwide."

And the President's words earlier - in line with his constant calls to "drill, baby, drill" in the US - were met with praise by Reform UK chief Nigel Farage.

Farage told The Telegraph on Friday: "Trump is 100 per cent right.

"Lower energy costs have powered the American economy whilst we de-industrialise. I will be visiting Aberdeen very soon to meet what is left of the industry."

His Scottish trip will come as Reform begins to outline plans to incentivise drilling in the North Sea.

Deputy leader Richard Tice has been doing the rounds with fossil fuel bosses to win them over - and convince them that they would be in line to reap the rewards of the oil fields off the British coast under a Reform Government.

Tice has told industry chiefs to "get their licence applications ready for Reform to fast-track when it comes into government".

"I'm urging them not to give up," Tice told the Financial Times. "There's about to be a sea change in less than four years.

"I want these firms to know they are working with a shadow government that is willing to tick the box as soon as we get in."
