In calling for Britain to rejoin the EU, the London Mayor has underlined his utter disdain for democracy, writes the leader of the Conservatives in the London Assembly

The Mayor of London has three main roles. First, he or she should support the Metropolitan Police in cutting crime and keeping Londoners – and visitors to our City – safe.

Secondly, he should hold TfL to account in ensuring people can travel as swiftly, safely and cheaply as possible around London. Thirdly, he should do everything possible to make sure that the homes that London needs are being built.

There are certainly plenty of other things that a decent Mayor should be doing, not least standing up to a Government which is damaging the Capital.

However, Sadiq Khan has not even been able to bring himself to criticise Rachel Reeves’ job-destroying National Insurance hike.

Sadiq Khan is also failing at his day job, as crime has soared over the decade he has been Mayor, he has slashed transport funding for boroughs, introduced policies which have seen our congestion-choked roads grind to a halt, given in to the transport unions again and again, whilst his dogma-fuelled housing policies have been a disaster meaning he has combined a complete failure to build anywhere near enough houses with a desperation to build the wrong types of housing in the wrong places.

Despite manifestly failing at his day job, the Mayor has not hesitated to offer advice to Keir Starmer, calling for the Labour Party to go into the next general election promising to rejoin the EU. Furthermore, he has also stated that the Labour Government should join the Single Market and the Customs Union before that election.

In doing so, he has, as with his decision to force through the ULEZ expansion without a mandate, underlined his utter disdain for democracy.

He knows that Labour’s 2024 manifesto was very clear in promising ‘There will be no return to the single market, the customs union, or freedom of movement’. He knows, and he does not care. He sees a flailing Government breaking promise after promise and believes that has created an opportunity for him.

Much like Sadiq Khan, the Government has already shown a consistent willingness to prioritise ideological dogma and its client state over doing the hard work to deliver genuine improvements.

In addition, we have seen how this Government negotiates. Kemi Badenoch is absolutely right to state that “When Labour negotiates, Britain loses”.

We have seen the Government try to give the Chagos Islands to Mauritius - country which has never owned them - and pay Mauritius £35billion for the privilege.

We have seen the Government give doctors a 28.9 per cent pay rise, without any agreement on staffing reforms, no strike agreements or productivity gains.

We have already seen this Government negotiate with the EU to give away our fishing rights, rejoin Erasmus at vast expense and worse.

If the Government were to take Sadiq Khan’s advice and try to rejoin the EU, there really is no limit to what they might give up in return.

Indeed, given Sadiq Khan would like the UK to join the Single Market and the Customs Union we already have a steer that he is so desperate to rejoin the EU that he would be willing to create a situation whereby the UK has all the downsides of forced alignment with the EU without any of the benefits of being able to flexibly diverge – for example on setting our own AI regulations or banning live animal exports.

How soon would we join the euro? How many billions would this Government agree to pay this time?

It is no surprise that a terrible Mayor of London has some terrible advice for a terrible Government. For now, that advice appears to have been rejected, but it would not be terribly surprising if a new Labour Leader chose a different path.

If so, then all the evidence is that it would quickly go terribly wrong.
