Anti-monarchists smell the stench of blue blood a mile off, writes the columnist

The anti-monarchist mob are loving every second of Andrew Mountbatten’s humiliation. Like a bunch of rabid dogs salivating over a bloodied carcass, they see the public spectre of a degraded Andrew as their moment to bring down the monarchy - the institution that for years they’ve wanted to destroy because they see it as elitist.

“The Royal Family have known about Andrew for years,” they scream. Yes, well, so did the Government. So did the police, so did many areas of the establishment.

And guess what, no one did a damn thing. Despite numerous warnings, everyone just looked the other way. But now these anti-monarchists smell the stench of blue blood, and with teeth bared, they’re going for the kill.

Not least the cabal of MP’s who have now perched themselves atop the moral high ground, shouting that the royals are a public institution answerable to us and must be put under more public scrutiny.

"Whether you’re a monarchist or not, the Royal Family performs public duties and is paid with public money,” said former Lib Dem minister Norman Baker.

Yes, they are paid with public money, but then so are MPs, and it doesn’t stop the present bunch in Government being a mob of 24-carat shysters.

One (that we know of) dodged tax, another was convicted of fraud, one was convicted of punching a constituent, and one (now an ex-Labour MP) has been arrested on sex offences.

Oh, and lots of them take freebies from rich donors and even more lie to us on a regular basis. All of these people are all paid out of the public purse, but it doesn’t make them good or decent people. I’m an unashamed monarchist. I don’t think the Royal Family are perfect, not by any stretch.

Like all families, they have their faults. But I do believe they give this little island of ours a dignity and a presence on the global stage we wouldn’t otherwise have. And despite the best efforts of Harry and Meghan, the Royal Family is still respected worldwide.

Presidents and Prime Ministers clamour to be invited on a royal visit. Tourists from all over the world flock to London just to get a glimpse of Buckingham Palace and to jump on the royal bandwagon, if only for a few days. And on a practical note, the total value of the monarchy as a business is estimated to be over £67billion.

Every year, the royals contribute £2.5billion to the UK economy. And the Crown Estate - a portfolio of land and property, which belongs to the monarch but is managed for the state - delivered a record £1.1billion in net profit to public finances in 2023–24.

But what have the shouty anti-monarchists - mostly from the Labour Party, the BBC and from the usual suspect newspapers - ever contributed to this country? Naff all!

And what has this Government contributed to public finances? Oh, hang on, they’ve devastated them. We don’t have any money left thanks to Starmer, Reeves and Co.

And yet the monarchy haters want to bring the whole royal edifice crashing down, and for what – one bad apple? If we were to close down Governments or police forces because of their bad apples, there wouldn’t be an institution left standing. The fact is, Andrew Mountbatten Windsor is not representative of our Royal Family.

Our dear department Queen Elizabeth – a woman who devoted her entire life to duty and service - was. King Charles, the man who patiently waited a lifetime to serve his country and who now, even with cancer, is doing it, absolutely is.

Then there’s Kate, who’s also had cancer, yet she’s back at work with a punishing schedule, showing day after day she’s the pride of this nation.

And there’s Wills, who’s every bit as angry about Uncle Andrew as the rest of us and wants him kicked out of the organisation. Yet still the monarchy haters want to consign the whole Windsor clan to the dustbin of history because of their own twisted ideals.

Yes, the Royal Family might have suspected Andrew was dodgy - how could they not if we as a nation did – but they weren’t alone in thinking that.

Governments did, police forces did, and aspects of the civil service did, but no one wanted to rock the boat. It took a convicted paedophile to do that, and Epstein’s tentacles reached into so many establishments, so many organisations, so many families, its mind blowing.

But in recent days, the republicans have been blatant in blaming other royals for the sins of their one black sheep. They’ve snidely blamed his mother, the Queen, for being too soft on him. They’ve accused Charles of knowing something of Andrew’s dodgy business associations as far back as 2019.

But presumably Andrew lied to his family the same way he lied to us in that infamous Newsnight interview. He told us all that none of the rumours was true.

It's only now, thanks to the Epstein files, that light is finally being shed on what exactly happened. So, it's monstrous to now blame the Queen for what Andrew did and what he is. Should every parent be held responsible for the wrongdoings of their children?

Andrew is a grown man who shouldn’t have needed to be told by his mother, or anyone else, that mixing with paedophiles was wrong, that abusing his position as Britain’s trade envoy was wrong and insulting foreign dignitaries was wrong.

Whatever people might think of the actual institution of the Monarchy, the family at the heart of it have a worldwide reputation for duty, commitment and hard work.

And everywhere they go heap pride on this country does not shame as Andrew has. And it’s horribly unfair that their reputation is now being tainted by the fact that Andrew is a greedy, narcissistic, entitled waster. And to suggest the whole of the monarchy should now be dumped (and smeared) because of him is farcical.

Should the whole of the Labour Party be scrapped because its Kingpin, Peter Mandelson, consorted with Jeffrey Epstein? A majority of people still love and respect the Monarchy. We don’t want Andrew Mountbatten Windsor to be part of it anymore, but we must not condemn his entire family because of him.

They aren’t like him, and we have proof of that in everything they have done for this country - and are still doing. And we certainly don’t want to see that family destroyed and discredited by a bunch of foaming-at-the-mouth Republicans – many of them Labour MP’s – who don’t have the guts to stick their heads above the parapet and say how much they hate the institution because they know it would cost them votes.

Just think if the Monarchy were to be got rid of – these Republicans are what we’d be left with and whatever shame Andrew has brought on Britain its nothing to what they’d do!
