Starmer has announced plans to establish offshore detention centres for failed asylum seekers

Now, as part of his efforts to crack down on the spiralling illegal immigration crisis, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has announced plans to establish offshore detention centres for failed asylum seekers - something he claims could become part of the UK’s "armoury" in tackling the issue.

The Prime Minister made this announcement during a visit to Albania, a trip that has been criticised as an embarrassment after Albania’s leader appeared to rule out hosting such a facility in his country.

The entire situation is absurd. The Conservative government previously introduced the Rwanda scheme to process migrants offshore and provide a deterrent to the rising number of illegal migrants breaking our laws. Labour scrapped it. They called it a gimmick.

But what we’re seeing now is Sir Keir Starmer scrambling to find a gimmick of his own, exploring alternative offshore solutions, which only shows Labour’s lack of seriousness on this issue.

Had Labour not scrapped the Rwanda scheme, we could have removed ALL illegal arrivals - not just failed asylum seekers - as the Prime Minister now proposes.

Instead, Labour’s current approach focuses solely on deporting failed applicants, while approving the vast majority of asylum claims here in Britain.

Adding to the concern, a shocking new report has revealed that tens of thousands of Channel migrants arriving in the UK are escaping full police checks and are not even being questioned by officials. Alarmingly, only one in fifteen illegal immigrants are questioned about their links with smugglers and even then, these interviews are voluntary.

All of this comes as government spending watchdogs warn that the cost of asylum accommodation is projected to triple, reaching a staggering £15.3 billion over the next decade. That’s probably enough for ten new hospitals in this country

And while our Government continues to - I think - flounder around the issue, we’ve seen reports of a suspected Iranian terrorist arriving by a small boat. Underlining the very real threat this crisis poses to our national security. And now, the European Union is urging the UK to ease its visa restrictions for under-30s as part of a proposed youth mobility scheme. In exchange, the EU may offer cooperation on tackling the Channel migrant crisis by making available migrant and criminal data.

Sorry, but why do we even need to strengthen our links with the European Union to deal with this crisis?! What we need to do is leave the ECHR, reform the human rights act, and put in place an active deterrent, a bit like the Rwanda plan but one which prioritises UK law.

What the UK needs and what taxpayers deserve is a robust and comprehensive offshore processing system for everyone who arrives on these islands illegally.

Is the government gaslighting us into believing they have this under control?
