We've long known Keir Starmer is hellbent on stamping out free speech, but this is way worse, writes columnist Carole Malone

So, here’s how it goes - investigative journalists spend a lot of time and effort investigating stories – often about the Government of the day – and when they have enough information, they print the story.

All pretty simple.

And this is exactly what happened when two Sunday Times journalists printed (the true) story of how, in the run-up to the last election, the Labour Party had failed to declare £730,000 worth of donations between 2017 and 2020.

But having been caught out breaking electoral law (20 finance laws to be precise), you’d think the Government’s reaction to that might have been to apologise, to do a very public Mea Culpa.

But no, what happened instead was that the Labour Think Tank, Labour Together (which was instrumental in getting Starmer and Labour elected), spent £36,000 to launch an obscene dirty tricks campaign against the two journalists who had written the (true) story.

And that's how this Government (and its think tanks) deals with the truth -they try to destroy the people who are telling it.

Because don’t tell me Keir Starmer didn’t know what was happening here. Morgan McSweeney, who was his right-hand man until last week, helped set up Labour Together. So, his filthy fingers were dug deep into this rotten pie, as he had been responsible for making decisions at the time he was Chief Executive. So, it’s not a big stretch to think Starmer would have known too.

Downing Street is insisting there was no reason for Starmer to have known about the report that Labour Together had commissioned from a U.S. consultancy group, Apco, at a cost of £36,000, even though the finished report had been circulated among senior Labour figures.

Isn’t this Peter Mandelson all over again - Starmer pretending he knows nothing about anything so he can escape responsibility?

Apco is clearly a joke which had no clue what it was doing and which not only made vile personal ( and fake) claims about the two reporters in its report ( one of them was Jewish so you can draw your own conclusions about what they said about him ) it also suggested that the story was part of a Russian disinformation campaign and had relied on e mails sourced either directly or indirectly from Russian hackers.

The report’s author, some dipstick called Tom Harper, said with zero authenticated evidence, that he believed the story emerged from a hack of the electoral commission and that the “likeliest culprit is the Russia state or proxies of the Russian state.”

Mr Harper (and Labour Together) seem ignorant as to what investigative journalists actually do. It clearly hadn’t occurred to either that these two skilled journalists had published a true story about a major UK political party ahead of a general election because they were simply doing their job – investigating!

And it was nothing whatsoever to do with deep hacks from the Russian state. Yet still they found it necessary to investigate the “background and motivations” of the reporters behind the story.

Well, as they don’t get the “motivation”, I’ll explain it simply by saying the two journalists wanted to expose the Labour Party for breaking electoral law, which they did expertly and correctly.

But Labour Together and the Government were so desperate to believe they were bad'uns that they wickedly fed snippets of this ludicrous report to other journalists so that it would leak into the public domain and damage the two men at the heart of the story.

That’s evil and is what happens in Banana Republics, not in Britain.

How much more rot are we going to see seeping out of this Government. Never forget that Starmer promised us he was going to clean up politics and restore honesty and integrity. How the Hell can he do that when he keeps telling us he has no idea what’s going on inside his own Government?

We’ve always known this Labour Government would ban a free press in a heartbeat if it could. We also know it's hellbent on stamping out free speech. But this is way worse than that because this kind of smear campaign is trying to ban the actual truth.

Labour did fail to declare £750,000 worth of donations. That’s a fact. But we have a government that is prepared to allow Truth Tellers to be crushed. They don’t just want to bury true stories; they want to bury the journalists who write them.

Of course, Governments don’t like being investigated because they rarely come out well. But instead of trying to destroy the people who expose their dishonesty, their lack of integrity, here’s an idea – why not just behave better with a bit of decency and integrity?

Or is that too much to ask from Keir Starmer and his mob?
