The irony is so thick you could cut it with a knife, writes GB News panellist Renee Hoenderkamp

This week we saw the newspapers cover the story of a bloke, Jonathan Carley, a 65-year-old, who decided to play dress-up as a Royal Navy admiral for a Remembrance Sunday event.

He had the full kit: uniform, medals, the works. But he's no admiral; he never served a day in the Navy. He got caught and was miraculously hauled into court faster than you could say ‘anchors aweigh’.

Eight short weeks from being caught to pleading guilty at Llandudno Magistrates' Court. He was found guilty, receiving a £500 fine, £85 in costs and a £200 surcharge, and bam, a man gets a criminal record for wearing a uniform without permission and pretending to be a different type of man, a military man.

Do I think he should have done it? Of course not. It's disrespectful to those magnificent veterans who put their lives on the line to protect you and me.

He’s clearly not a very nice man, has some sort of inferiority complex and needs to big himself up, but in the cold light of day, there was no long-term harm done, no one got hurt, no safe spaces invaded, just a bit of harmless Walter Mitty fantasy.

So I couldn’t help thinking about the different legal and societal responses to a man dressing up as a military man versus untold boys and men dressing up as girls and women and insisting that they are indeed what they suggest.

In his case, the system swooped in, labelled him a fake, slapped him with penalties that stick for life and publicly humiliated him, and the media played along. Outraged at the imposter. Defending the men he imitated and upset.

Now, flip to the men who are dressing as women, insisting that they are actually women, and then barge into spaces that have been protected for biological females for generations.

We're not talking about quiet, personal transitions here; we are talking about everyday cases where "being their authentic selves" means men invading women's changing rooms, prisons, sports teams, and demanding that actual women who voice concern shut up or face cancellation.

And society and the media, what do they say? They mainly laud them, protect them with laws, and encourage this ‘authenticity’ like it's the pinnacle of progress. No swift court dates, no fines, no criminal records, in fact, often the opposite: accolades, sponsorships, and a shield from criticism under the banner of inclusivity.

The only people likely to end up in court are women. Women who refuse to buy into the lie, refuse to accept men in their spaces, men watching them undress, men stealing their sporting prizes. Women are told to be kind. No one was told to be kind to the admiral.

The irony is so thick you could cut it with a knife. One fake admiral gets the book thrown at him for a costume at a memorial, while fake women (biologically and emotionally speaking) get to rewrite the rules of fairness and safety, and we're all supposed to cheer.

Even when it is so ludicrous that women would laugh if they didn’t cry. Newspapers still, in 2026, referring to men in dresses in court for the heinous crime of rape as she, her.

It's so crazy that the words "she raped her with her penis" are now deemed respectful, but only to the fake woman, not the real one who was raped.

Can you imagine if in court the judge, the lawyers and the journalists referred to the fake Admiral as Admiral? If all of the virtue-signalling supporters of the most misogynistic attack on women used the same rules for men pretending to be other men, they would indeed have referred to Mr Carley as Admiral Carley.

But they didn’t. I don’t think this juxtaposition has even crossed their tiny misogynistic minds. I am still waiting to see just one article pointing out the hypocrisy.

Meanwhile, as the fake Admiral faces a ruined life of shame, the Darlington Nurses, who were told they needed re-education when they objected to a man pretending to be a woman, changing in their space as they too changed under his gaze, are punished.

They are not working; they have not been reinstated and are awaiting the outcome of their employment tribunal. That’s right; hard-working nurses have been chased out of their changing rooms and jobs by a bloke in a dress. And they await disciplinary action from their own nursing body.

Then there is UK nurse Jennifer Melle, who was suspended after an unblemished 10 year career, given a final written warning, and referred to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) after she referred to a male prisoner on her ward who ‘identified’ as a woman as "Mr" and "he" when she described his male issue to a doctor.

The patient, a convicted paedophile, subsequently subjected Ms Melle to severe racial and verbal abuse. What happened to the man pretending to be a woman? Nothing as far as we know. Jennifer has lost her livelihood, and the NHS has lost an excellent nurse.

And these men are not even trying as hard as the fake Admiral tried (although I am told there were obvious errors in medals and short, he did manage it for 10 years).

They can literally declare ‘I am a woman’ and the media, government organisations, lefty lovies and actors and anyone who has a sprinkling of wokery about them, fall at their feet and tell them they are brave and courageous and authentic.

Even when they have beards… and before you shout ‘that doesn’t happen, ‘that’s extreme’, just today a man appeared in court as Miss Potter in a skirt and a full beard and the court referred to him as Miss.

And so it continues in sports, where men are using their inherent genetic advantage to bully women into silence and steal their prizes or parade their penises around the female changing rooms, and the world lets them. And before you shout ‘that doesn’t happen’ or ‘that’s extreme’, yes, it does, and no, it isn’t.

Just ask Riley Gaines about Lia Thomas, the 6ft 2in male who walked around the university swimming changing room naked and the girls who complained were sent for re-education.

Just this week, I read about a man "who didn't even bother to change his name" who won the Oregon women's 5000m junior varsity race by over two minutes. "His time was almost four minutes slower than the first-place winner in the boys' race and would have landed him in 62nd place had he been competing against his own gender."

But dare to dress up as a man when you are already a man, and lord, you commit a crime that will not be tolerated. So I ask again, why is the world tolerating, even celebrating, men who dress up as women and make demands of women that risk their safety? I am not.
