Kelvin MacKenzie delivers his verdict for GBN Members on the Iceland boss's decision to switch allegiance to Labour

For all his wealth I doubt you would want to be a deceitful hypocrite like Richard Walker, the executive chairman of the frozen food business Iceland.

This morning Labour unveiled him as their new poster boy. He starts off with a piece in the Guardian explaining the nation needs ‘’ sound leadership’’ after years of chaos and that is why he is switching to Starmer. Then there was the breakfast tv interview talking about the ‘’mess’’ the country was in.

His mammoth hypocrisy is that he wrote to Rishi Sunak at No.10 in May last year saying his ‘’fervent’’ wish was to be a Tory candidate at the General Election.

Further, he said he had done everything to get on the preferred Tory candidate list. Like campaigning at by-election for the Tories and doing media rounds on behalf of the Tories

But he was disappointed. Instead of being snapped up he had been put on the ‘’deferred’’ list and Walker wanted Rishi to push him up the ladder.

Kelvin MacKenzie delivered his verdict on Iceland boss switching allegiance

The Tories refused to bend the rules for him.

And that is the reason , and the only reason, he announced he was switching sides.

Had Rishi said we will change the rules to help you by today he would driving round the shires shouting ‘’ Vote Conservative’’ from the speaker on his Bentley.

Instead we had the nauseating site of Starmer making his way round an Iceland store - I am sure he had never visited one before - explaining how even the executive chairman doesn’t believe in Conservatism any more.

This switch will have done neither Walker nor Labour any good.

Walker, who has made it clear he is not becoming a member of the Labour party, will be viewed by his new mates as not one of them because he only came over because the other side did not want him.

And for Walker, who might have got his Iceland job because his bloody clever dad Malcolm is the business founder, will receive a bucket load of bad publicity and is now destined to be pilloried today and every day for his lack of judgment.
