It took me twenty minutes just to calm down, writes the Conservative leader in the London Assembly

I'm still shaking with anger after my clash with Khan yesterday. The cheek of that man to sit there and try to turn one of the most important miscarriages of justice in British history into a political game is disgusting, and it makes my blood boil in an instant.

Every year, the Mayor of London must present a budget to the London Assembly to approve for the following 12 months, and we as Assembly Members get a series of sessions to scrutinise it - line by line, we examine the way the Mayor spends our taxes, and seek out ways to improve it.

Everyone who knows me knows how much I care about tackling crime, and every year I am there demanding the necessary resources for the police to keep us safe.

But this year I had a different ask: that when the magic money tree finds a bit of extra cash for the Mayor - as it somehow has done every year - that he considers using that funding to investigate grooming gangs, and to look into this heinous crime in our capital.

My report, out this week, explored how if a grooming gang operated in London, it’s entirely possible that the authorities wouldn’t even know, given their historic failings; so it’s vital that the Mayor proactively engages with plans to get justice for the victims and survivors. It was a simple request: put the money towards fighting this insidious evil.

How did Khan respond? Childish, petty games; obfuscation. But the real insult was the moment he insinuated that I was doing this for political reasons, that I was pressing him because it was a red vs blue game. I tell you, the red mist descended.

How dare he, sitting where he does, condescend to suggest that people who care about victims of grooming gangs are doing it for political reasons? How dare he write off the work being done - across the political spectrum - to expose this evil as hapless politicking?

It took me twenty minutes just to calm down from the rage that man built up in me. It wasn’t until I watched back the moment on social media that I realised I’d banged the desk, so angry was I.

It’s disgusting, it’s a disgrace to his office, and it tells me everything I need to know about the measure of Sir Sadiq Khan as Mayor of London.

We must get justice for the survivors of grooming gangs, and we must see to it that those who covered up this evil face the consequences of their cowardice.

Here in City Hall, and across London, I will be campaigning for the vulnerable young girls and boys who were trafficked and raped.

The Mayor may think that he got a rise out of me, but far from it - all he has done is pour fuel on the fire inside me that is determined to see this mission to completion. Justice will have its day.
