There are moments in politics when a single line tells you everything you need to know. This week, it was the now-infamous suggestion linked to Ed Miliband that pubs could cut costs by serving warmer beer.
Let that sink in.
In a country where the pub is not just a business but the backbone of community life, that kind of comment isn’t just misguided, it’s really insulting. It shows a complete lack of understanding of how pubs actually operate.
Anyone who has ever worked behind a bar, run a pub, or even pulled a proper pint knows this: temperature isn’t optional, it’s essential.
Beer is not meant to be warm. You don’t “adjust” it to save a few quid. You get it wrong, you ruin the product. And once the beer quality goes, so do your customers.
It really is that simple.
This is what happens when decisions and advice come from offices instead of real-world experience.
Running a pub is relentless. Margins are tight, the costs are constant, and there is no room for gimmicks. Cellar cooling, fridges, and bar systems are designed to run properly and consistently; they are not built to be turned off for a few hours like a bedside lamp. You start messing around with that, and you’re not saving money, you’re storing up bigger problems.
Breakdowns, spoiled stock and costly repairs.
The Government knows the sector is struggling.
Energy bills are through the roof. National Insurance contributions have been put up. Wage costs keep rising with increases to the minimum wage.
Now, everyone wants staff to earn more; of course, they do, but businesses have to find that extra money somewhere. It doesn’t just appear magically.
Right now, it’s coming out of the pockets of already struggling pubs.
And what do they get in return?
Advice about warmer beer.
You just couldn’t make it up.

Look across Europe, and you see a completely different approach. Countries like France, Spain and Italy have VAT on hospitality at around 10 per cent. Why? Because they understand hospitality isn’t just a sector, it’s an economic driver.
Lower VAT means lower prices. Lower prices mean more customers…and more customers mean stronger businesses, more jobs, and ultimately more tax revenue.
It’s basic economics.
Here in the UK, pubs are being squeezed from every direction. Higher taxes, rising costs, and zero meaningful relief. And instead of action, we get comments that show just how far removed some politicians are from the reality on the ground.
The idea that you can switch cooling systems off overnight and everything will be fine is nonsense. Equipment doesn’t work like that. Keep turning it on and off, and you increase wear and tear, increase the risk of failure, and in the end, you pay more, not less.
So what does this really show?
A Government that simply doesn’t get it.
Pubs are not asking for handouts; we are asking for fairness. A cut in VAT and a bit of breathing space so we can actually survive.
Because right now, the truth is many aren’t.
Walk down any high street, and you’ll see it for yourself. Shuttered pubs and empty buildings. Places that used to be packed are now gone. These aren’t just businesses closing; they are communities losing their heart.
And once they’re gone, they’re gone; that’s the reality.
Hospitality is right on the edge, and many have already fallen off.
If this Government, and ministers like Miliband, don’t wake up quickly, we are going to see far more closures, far more job losses, and far more communities hollowed out.
