OPINION: Patrick Christys shares his views on Care4Calais

The refugee charity Care4Calais wants to stop French police from intercepting migrant boats in the water.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper announced that France has now agreed to begin intervening in French waters to prevent small boats from leaving.

Yvette Cooper said this: "That hasn’t happened yet, but the previous government spent six years trying to persuade them. France has now agreed, as a result of the pressure we’ve applied and the discussions we’ve had and we need that to start."

We’ve been wondering when it would happen, because so far all we’ve seen is the French offering illegal migrants lifejackets, or moving quickly across the sand as the day breaks near Dunkirk.

And although the police are present, they do nothing to stop this caravan of people just letting them run past while they smoke cigarettes and, I don’t know, talk about baguettes or something.

But Care4Calais? A bunch of hippy refugee-huggers, and in my view, borderline national traitors. They're now considering taking legal action to stop the French from intercepting boats.

They've already taken legal action to prevent turning the boats back and launched legal challenges against the Rwanda plan.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Some people have accused Care4Calais of essentially making human traffickers’ lives easier by helping provide illegal migrants with supplies for their journey, allegations they of course deny. But this takes it to a whole new level, doesn’t it?

Get this: the current head of Care4Calais is a former British Army colonel named Steve Smith.

He said it would be "impossibly dangerous" to try and stop the boats if there are women and children on board. Grief! Was he in charge of national defence in 1066 or something? It’s pathetic.

The charity also has a questionable track record. Clare Moseley, its founder, was accused of having an affair with a Tunisian toy boy. She later stepped down after allegedly threatening to drag a female volunteer around by her "effing hair."

Other refugee charities have been accused of even worse. Some volunteers were allegedly sexually exploiting migrants, including children.

If a democratically elected government wants to take action, we can’t have a bunch of do-gooders blocking it. Especially when they’re not even willing to put their money where their mouths are.

You’ve seen the signs saying, "Refugees welcome."

But ask them if they'd house one, and suddenly it’s "Well, if I had the space..."

They won’t take them in themselves, will they?

Meanwhile, a record 17,034 have crossed the Channel this year and it needs to stop.
