The first carnival parade was held in the East Yorkshire town 101 years ago

A carnival dating back more than a century is set to return to a seaside town following a three-year hiatus.

The streets of Withernsea in East Yorkshire will soon be lined with parade floats and fancy dress costumes when the annual carnival parade gets underway next month.

The parade has a long history in the town, having started back in 1924.

However, it was called off in 2021 as a result of restrictions brought on by the Covid pandemic.

The carnival parade saw a turnout of around 500 people last year

Dawn Wharam, vice chairwoman of the group which organises the event, said around 500 people turned out last year.

"It gives you goosebumps when you see everyone lining the streets," Wharam told the BBC.

The historic parade will take place on Saturday, August 16, starting from Withernsea High School at 1.30pm.

It forms part of a week full of activities and entertainment being held in the town from August 9.

Next month will also mark the return of London's Notting Hill Carnival, taking place on August bank holiday weekend.

The annual event, which celebrates Caribbean culture, attracts about two million people every year.

However, it emerged last month that the carnival could be in jeopardy as organisers called on the Government for funding to safeguard its "future and public safety".

Last year, two people were murdered in a pair of tragic separate incidents.

Shakeil Thibou was found guilty of the murder of Cher Maximen after he stabbed the mother in front of her three-year-old daughter during the carnival’s family day last year.

Separately, Omar Wilson repeatedly punched and kicked Mussie Imnetu during an altercation outside a restaurant in Queensway, west London, near the carnival on August 26 last year.
