A security guard was hospitalised after being bitten by an XL Bully in Leicester city centre.

Officers from Leicestershire police attended the scene at Highcross Shopping Centre at around 12.30pm on Saturday, November 18.

It comes after the owner of the dog was denied entry into a shop by a security guard.

The guard was then bitten by the dog, suffering injuries to his arm and leg.

The security guard sustained an injury to his arm and leg and was discharged from hospital after treatment.

After the attack, the XL Bully owner left the scene but was later arrested in nearby Silver Street.

The owner was arrested on suspicion of allowing a dog to be dangerously out of control in a public place and causing injury.

The dog's owner has since been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Now, an appeal has been launched after footage of the incident circulated online.

It comes as legislation was brought in by then Environment Secretary Therese Coffey, making it illegal to sell, breed or abandon an XL Bully dog from December 31.

Campaigners from Don’t Ban Me - Licence Me have raised more than £86,000 in their bid to raise money for funding a judicial review.

One owner Heather Halls and her husband Chris said: “They’ve never ever done anything wrong.

“We’ve owned bull breeds for 10 years and they’ve never put a foot wrong.

"We’ve never had altercations in public, we have had nothing but a positive experience.”

There has been a number of mauling attacks and deaths related to the breed, including 10-year-old Jack Lis and 17-month-old Bella-Rae Birch.
