Violent riots have erupted in a Swiss city after a teenage migrant died in a scooter crash while fleeing police.

Protesters threw Molotov cocktails and rocks at police who in turn deployed tear gas and rubber bullets in the French-speaking city of Lausanne.

The unrest saw around 200 rioters clashing with 140 police officers across two consecutive nights of violence.

Marvin M, a 17-year-old Swiss resident of Lausanne died at around 3.45am on Sunday after he hit a garage wall as he fled police on a stolen scooter.

A criminal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident has been launched by the public prosecutor of the canton of Vaud.

It was the third death involving police in fewer than three months in Lausanne, which sits on the shores of Lake Geneva.

There have been seven in the wider region of Vaud since 2016, five of which have involved men of African origin.

In the Prelaz neighbourhood, "around 100 young people, wearing balaclavas" gathered from around 9pm and proceeded to throw fireworks at police and set fire to rubbish bins.

On Monday, local police said they faced up to 200 people who had used bins, which they then set on fire, to set up roadblocks.

Police responded with tear gas and rubber bullets and arrested seven people.

"Pyrotechnic devices were used against police... It's scandalous," Lausanne city's Security Councillor Pierre-Antoine Hildbrand told local media.

He added: "We are facing a movement that has nothing to do with the death of this youth, but which is using it as an excuse to attack law enforcement. It's disgraceful."

Police have said the teenager was being followed by a car when he died on Sunday, but the Vaud public prosecutor's office said in a statement it was working to "clarify and calm the situation".

The statement added that the fact two motorists approached the teen before police arrived on the scene suggested there was "significant distance" between the 17-year-old and the pursuing police vehicle, and that "no contact" was made.

Marvin's mother has insisted her son was innocent and not a thief - despite how the scooter was stolen.

His brother shared a post online which said: "You should be with me, at home, in out room, which we've always shared."

Thibault Schaller, a local councillor for the Swiss People's Party, was thrown to the ground by rioters as tensions escalated over the weekend.

Mr Schaller said on social media: "Buses and trash cans set on fire in Prelaz in reaction to the death of the 17-year-old youth who died Sunday morning while fleeing police on a stolen scooter.

"Unaware of what it's about, I head to the scene. Some Antifa recognise me, three surround me, back against the wall, and they order me to leave.

"I refuse and ask what's happening. One pushes me, I push him back then step back, someone shouts something, and ten, fifteen people come running at me from everywhere.

"I run away, take hits, they block my path, I fall, protect myself, I pick up while one or two people tell me to leave.

"I get up, run, get surrounded again against a wall, blows, then I manage to get away by running."
