European nations have closed their airspace and borders amid escalating tensions with Russia.
After an assessment by armed forces, Latvia will close its airspace near to the Eastern border with Belarus and Russia for a week until September 18.
The country's defence minister, Andris Sprūds, said while there is no direct threat to Latvia, preventive measures were necessary.
It comes after Russia shot down suspected Russian drones in its airspace on Wednesday with the backing of aircraft from its Nato allies.
It is the first time member of the Western military alliance is known to have fired shots during Russia's war in Ukraine.
According to local media, Mr Sprūds said: "Russian drones in Nato airspace are a wake-up call and we must do everything possible to prevent an escalation of drone attacks."
Poland will meanwhile temporarily close its border with Belarus, including rail crossings, from just after midnight tonight, local time.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced the shutting of the border on Tuesday, prior to Poland downing Russian drones.

Poland said 19 objects had entered its airspace during a large Russian air attack on Ukraine and that it had shot those posing a threat.
The border closure will be in place as a result of Russia-led military exercises taking place in Belarus.
Russia and Belarus' large-scale military exercises, known as the "Zapad" drills, have sparked security concerns in neighbouring Nato member states Poland, Lithuania and Latvia.
"On Friday, Russian-Belarusian manoeuvres, very aggressive from a military doctrine perspective, begin in Belarus, very close to the Polish border, Mr Tusk told a government meeting.

"Therefore, for national security reasons, we will close the border with Belarus, including railway crossings, in connection with the Zapad manoeuvres on Thursday at midnight."
Asked about the duration of the border closure, Poland's Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski said it would only be reopened when the government was sure "there was no more threat to Polish citizens".
The Belarusian Foreign Ministry said the border closure "caused significant difficulties".
It described the measure as "an abuse of its geographical position".

"The temporary suspension of passage indicates rather an intention to conceal one's own actions than the existence of any threat from Belarus," it said.
Lithuania's border guard said on Tuesday that the protection of its border with Belarus and Russia would be strengthened due to the exercises.
The "Zapad" exercises will include drills on the possible use of nuclear weapons and the Russian-made, intermediate-range hypersonic Oreshnik missile, according to Belarus' defence minister.
