Teachers restrained the attacker before police arrived at the scene, according to a police spokesman.

Authorities have stated there is no evidence suggesting a terrorist motive.

Local media reported that a high school student entered the premises of Notre-Dame-de-Toutes-Aides armed with a knife around midday local time.

According to BFM, the victim who died was female.

The attacker allegedly went to the second floor of the school and stabbed her before returning downstairs and attacking at least three other teenagers.

Concerned parents reportedly rushed to the school, which has since been cordoned off by police. Local media described an emotional scene, with students seen crying and consoling one another in the aftermath of the attack.

As investigations continue, a police perimeter remains in place around the area.

Speaking to local media, one student described the attacker as "a little weird since the beginning of the year".

He recounted: "I was in the study hall and we saw a lot of middle school students who came, at that time we had no information.

"It was the middle school students who told us that there was a student armed with a knife.

"I was able to speak with two students in his class apparently, he was a student who had been a bit strange since the beginning of the year."

A senior student told Ouest France: "We’re very shocked. We only see this on television. We didn’t think it could happen in our high school."

Another student said: "We heard the start of an alarm at 12.30pm, but nothing more. When we left at 1pm, we saw second-year students crying, and then some friends told me that it had happened on the second-year side, with three people stabbed."
