A major search involving police, fire crews, the State Disaster Response Force and locals has been launched

A YouTuber has been swept away by a waterfall in India after he walked into the middle of it to pose for videos.

Sagar Kundu, 22, was using a drone on Saturday to take the footage for his channel.

But tragedy struck when water levels surged and the man from Berhampur was swept away in the Duduma Waterfall in Odisha's Koraput region.

In a shocking video, Mr Kundu can be seen standing on a rock in the middle of the turbulent waters.

The footage shows onlookers trying to throw him a rope, and instructing him on what to do in attempts to save him.

However, just moments later, the water level rose abruptly - and after a brief struggle, the YouTuber is swept away, disappearing from view.

It is believed the incident occurred when water was suddenly released from the Machkund Dam following heavy rainfall.

This caused the level of the river to rise with little warning.

According to authorities, a major search involving police, fire crews, the State Disaster Response Force and locals was launched immediately.

Madhusudan Bhoi, the Inspector In-Charge at Machkund Police Station, said: "We have so far recovered a bag containing batteries and other equipment which he had thrown into the water moments before being swept away.

"The rescue operation in the hilly area has been challenging because of the rugged and rocky terrain and incessant rainfall," he added.

Fire Service Officer Umesh Chandra Bagh said a request had been made for the Machkund Dam to be closed while the investigation is underway, adding: "Once the water level recedes, it will help us carry out the search operation."

Mr Kundu's YouTube channel had focused primarily on photography, and aimed to capture the culture of Odisha.

His videos have racked up more than 100,000 views - and as of August 28, he has garnered almost 800 subscribers.
