"We can confirm that a body was found on a beach in Benidorm last night," he said.

"The individual has not been identified as there was no ID on his person," he added - but noted the body was that of a white man.

The spokesman added that authorities could not provide further information at this stage.

The gruesome discovery comes as local authorities grapple with increasing criminal activity in the region.

Within days of another recent incident, a bullet-riddled corpse was reportedly found in nearby Rojales.

The Costa Blanca has experienced what officials describe as an "explosion of crime" in recent months.

The region's growing appeal among criminal networks has led to increased illegal activity - drug traffickers have established a significant presence in the area, sparking a rise in associated criminal behaviour.

Violence, petty theft and street crime have all seen notable increases.

Benidorm has also earned an unfortunate nickname - "Narcos capital of the Costa Blanca" - due to a surge in drug crime.

Meanwhile, CCTV footage from the holiday hotspot has recently emerged showing visitors being stopped and pick-pocketed by women in Benidorm.

The mugging is said to centre around an area outside the Magic Villa de Benidorm - which sits right next to the local tourist police station.

British visitors have also reported violent encounters with security staff at venues.

His wife Tegan told The Sun: "They were like a pack of wolves with poles and pepper spray" - just because she was holding a drink from another establishment.
