A seabed off the coast of California has become a hotspot for several strange sightings of unidentified objects

Nasa should stop searching the skies for UFOs and instead search the oceans for underwater aliens, a retired US Navy Rear Admiral has said.

Timothy Gallaudet, the former head of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has launched a probe into unidentified submersible objects (USOs) after a strange anomaly was discovered on the seabed off the coast of California.

The seafloor in San Diego now has an abnormal trench in it, as if an object crashed into it then skidded to a stop, Gallaudet said.

“I cannot explain this feature and therefore want to use a ROV (remotely operated underwater vehicle) to dive from a ship and capture video of it,” he told The Telegraph.

He said he wanted to send a submarine down to the area to investigate the peculiar phenomena.

“That may allow us to identify its detailed characteristics and potentially determine what caused it. No one has agreed to provide a ship or ROV yet. A hypothesis is that it may have been formed by an interaction of an UAP (unidentified aerial phenomena) or USO with the seabed.”

He said these unidentified objects can sometimes travel in the ocean without ever emerging above water.

Gallaudet has spent the past 18 months interviewing numerous sailors, military personnel and members of the US Coastguard who have all noticed unidentified objects in the water.

In one particular incident filmed by the crew of the USS Ohama in 2019, a dark object was spotted quickly moving before plummeting down under the water.

Another strange incident occurred back in 2004 when US Navy Pilots discovered a 40ft oblong craft hovering just above the water.

Retired US Navy Lieutenant Commander Alex Dietrich who witnessed the craft said: “I don’t consider myself a whistleblower. I don’t identify as a UFO person. [But] we don’t know what it was. The point was that it was weird, and we couldn’t recognise it.”

Galluadet believes that evidence for USOs could be found in the US Navy’s acoustic data, however, this remains classified.

Earlier this week, he released a report on USOs alongside the Sol Foundation, a group of academics, and military and government officials who are dedicated to investigating UFOs.

The report urges the US Government to prioritise research into underwater anomalies that could threaten maritime security.

It also outlines an incident in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, where a fast-moving object in the Atlantic Ocean was identified by a US Customs and Border Protection aircraft.

Speaking at a recent Sol Foundation conference, Gallaudet said: “Just in the year-and-a-half or so now that I’ve become active and started interviewing people I have met dozens of people, commercial, military, Coast Guard, mariners and submariners who have had observations.

“I don’t have any data yet. That’s the next step. But this is several dozen people that have seen phenomena in our oceans, the tropical eastern and western Pacific, the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, Mediterranean, and the Indian Ocean, and the North Atlantic and eastern seaboard.

“So this is happening, and I am trying to get a better understanding of it.”

Last year, the All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), a new office dedicated to researching UFOs, was established by the Department of Defence.

Between August 2022 and April 2023, 274 sightings of UFOs were observed by military personnel, a report by the US Office of the Director of National Intelligence revealed.
