The fatal shooting occurred on Wednesday afternoon at Utah Valley University

GB News host Ben Leo shared his profound sorrow following the killing of American conservative figure Charlie Kirk, stating that the situation is "desperately sad" for Mr Kirk's young family.

The fatal shooting happened on Wednesday afternoon at Utah Valley University, where Mr Kirk was addressing students during the opening event of an autumn campus tour.

"I just feel desperately sad for his two young children," Ben said, recalling a social media post from July 27 where Mr Kirk appeared on American breakfast television with his young daughter perched on his lap.

"And you could see on Charlie's face how much he adored and loved his little baby. He was beaming from ear to ear, and he simply captioned the video something like: 'stop partying, find love, get married. God bless. Have a great Sunday'."

Ben explained: "And for me, that just epitomised what Charlie was about. He was all about leaving a legacy. And boy, has Charlie left a legacy. So much sadness now in America at his death.

"Not just from Conservatives, I may add. I mean, again, testament to his profile and stature here. We've had tributes from all across the political spectrum.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

"From the likes of President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Gavin Newsom, and even in the House of Representatives yesterday in Congress tried to lead a minute's silence of prayer.

"But unfortunately, which personifies how volatile tensions are right now here in America, that attempted minute’s silence turned into booing and a shouting match towards the end. It was pretty ugly scenes.

"The tributes came from all across the political spectrum. If you were watching Patrick Christys Tonight last night, Prime Minister Keir Starmer paid tribute to Charlie Kirk and talked about the need and the importance of free speech.

"Maybe that coming from the Prime Minister is a conversation for another time."

The 31-year-old media personality was struck by a single bullet to the neck, fired from approximately 200 yards away.

Weapons specialists have indicated that the sound of the shot points to a high-powered rifle rather than a handgun.

The assailant remains at large, with federal investigators confirming the individual is no longer present on the university grounds.

The FBI is yet to identify the shooter, and no arrests have been made in connection with the assassination.

Kirk had established himself as a prominent voice in American conservative politics, founding a significant media and political enterprise while still in his twenties.

The father-of-two had cultivated a massive online following and became one of President Trump's most trusted advisers, despite his youth.

His confrontational approach included staging debates at universities nationwide, where he engaged directly with students on contentious political topics.
