The heated exchange took place at Lincoln High School in Placer County earlier this week, with young students watching from the sidelines.

The schoolboy appeared to have become enraged after the staff member put his hand on the student's arm to take him towards the gym's exit.

Footage showed the student continuously push the teacher before throwing a punch - which hit the staff member's jaw.

The out-of-control pupil threw several more jabs at the teacher as he turned away from the boy and began walking away.

After the student was finally bundled out of the gym, a second staff member came to restrain him - but was aggressively thumped.

This triggered a school resourcer to charge at the boy, before picking him up off the ground and body-slam him to the floor, leaving fellow students gasping.

The Western Placer Unified School District confirmed after the incident that the student will face disciplinary action.

In a statement, the district said: "The safety and well-being of students and staff remain the highest priority for Lincoln High School and the Western Placer Unified School District.

"The behaviour displayed in this incident does not reflect the values of respect, responsibility, and kindness that the district upholds, and actions of this nature are not acceptable at any school."

The local police force confirmed that the unruly student was immediately arrested and booked into juvenile detention.

It is unknown whether the school district will be reviewing the resource officer's actions.

After footage of the incident went viral on social media, commentators were left divided.

One social media user said: "Glad a rational human came to solve the problem. Do better parents - not hard."

Another said: "Love how all the kids start cheering when he slams him."

However, one added: "The officer should be sued. There are amicable ways to do this".

School officials said that the remainder of the day continued as normal following the incident.
