Dawn Neesom pointed out that on a recent trip to Edinburgh, she saw their national flag multiple times

Broadcaster Clare Muldoon claimed that the Union flag is "one of the most beautiful flags in the world" after Britain's national symbol had been courted in controversy over the past few weeks.

Muldoon was discussing the pride that Scots feel for their flag, and GB News host Dawn Neesom pointed out that on a recent trip to Edinburgh, she saw the Scottish national flag on more than one occasion.

Explaining why Brits should feel proud of the flag, Muldoon said: "I think we should fly the flag at things like the Edinburgh Festival or indeed at any time we can.

"It is a beautiful flag. It's named after Saint Andrew because he was crucified that way as opposed to that way, like Christ.

"It is very symbolic. But ultimately the Union Flag, I think, is one of the most beautiful flags in this world.

"It's a sign of unity. It is the United Kingdom. There's no shame in our flag."

Former Labour adviser Scarlett Mccgwire added: "What's interesting is the time when you see the Saint George's flag for football when the English team is playing.

"Everybody has a Saint George's flag and people feel very, very English.

"It is really interesting and it's completely unifying.

"It didn't help that in the riots, a lot of thugs were wrapped up in Union flags and it is frightening. But, I think the good thing is the English football team."

This comes after a row engulfed a Norfolk village and some residents expressed concerns over the divisiveness of flying a Union Jack over the village hall.

Claxton in Norfolk found itself at the centre of a political row over plans to erect a flagpole outside the village hall.

The local parish council claimed there have so far been “strong reactions for and against” the flag being displayed outside the hall.

Some people argued that this could even put people off moving to the village.

Residents urged councillors to consider the “fine line between patriotism and nationalism”.

Local resident Glynnis White told The Eastern Daily Press: “The flag is often used as a symbol against immigration and it would worry me if it was being used in the wrong way.
