UK drivers warned they risk £1,000 fine for easy to forget mistake

Drivers must update details on their licence to avoid a £1000 fine, the DLVA has warned.

Anyone who has moved to a new address should notify the authority about the change or risk a hefty fine.

The government body issued the fresh reminder in a tweet on Thursday.

Drivers can be hit with fines up to £1,000 if the DVLA is not informed about a new address as current residential information is required if the holder be involved in an accident.

The rule counts for both full and provisional licences and also applies if a holder has only moved temporarily.

But does not apply if the DVLA can still reach a driver at a permanent address, for example if somebody was away for university.

A change of address is free of charge and motorists can continue driving while waiting for an updated licence.

The DVLA's tweet said: "Moved home? You must update your: driving licence, Vehicle log book (V5C), Direct Debit for vehicle tax, Private number plate documents".

Licence holders can apply to change their address online or via paper applications.

Anyone wanting to change their name on a licence can only complete the process by post by picking up a form at a local DVLA office.

Contact details must also be changed for vehicle logbooks, if drivers pay tax via direct debit or if anyone has a personalised number plate.

The same fine can be given if motorists update a licence only without changing an address on the above.
